Swimming
With 10+ years working in swimming as a member of the Society of Sports Therapists and a UKSCA Accredited Strength and Conditioning coach, starting with City of Peterborough Swimming club and currently City of Leeds Swimming, I have learned a lot about swimmer's needs and how to support their training. I have worked with various clubs and coaches as well as taking Therapy and Strength and conditioning workshops at Swim England national and regional camps. My clinic is based from Viking Strength Gym, Ossett, Wakefield, and provides a great space to train.
Reducing the risk of swimming injuries
The most common reason for injury within swimming is overuse due to the high volume nature of the sport. We commonly see injury and pain at the shoulders, hip, knee and trunk. By assessing training hours, intensity and history, movement, load tolerances, asymmetries and understanding of the potential contributors to injury, we can help the injury recover initially and then find a movement and load starting point in a rehab programme.
An injury prevention strategy can also be constructed, focusing on conditioning target areas and mobilising points of restriction which can then be included pre and post pool. Sports massage can also be a great tool to assist mobility and training soreness especially leading in, and off the back of competition.
Sport rehabilitation for swimmers
From a performance standpoint, land based training provides an opportunity to target specific physical adaptations, improving stability and power at the shoulder, trunk mobility and control to maintain a fast body position under race situations and power development to explode off the blocks. Initial screening of an athlete will give the information to build and create an effective programme, monitor progress through the season and optimise performance.
